Winter is here!

Here are some timely tips from Discovery Inspection Services.

Who remembers the last two crazy winters where ice damming became such a huge problem for those of us in Southcentral? I sure do, and I was proactive enough to identify solutions before this winter. For those of you that weren’t, it’s not too late!

With this upcoming thaw cycle, there may be just enough time to get those ice melt wires up on the eaves.

Safety tips:

Make sure you have good footing on the roof and especially where you may set up a ladder.

Don’t attempt to install anything on your roof unless you feel confident in your abilities.

Limit extension cord use whenever you install the ice melt and use an outdoor rated extension cord plugged into a GFCI protected circuit.

Get a helper whenever possible! Two makes the job more enjoyable and safer.

Use only UL listed ice melting systems, it should be labeled on the product.

If this winter proves to be like the last two, we may have huge snow days, and the accumulation will strain the roofs in the area. Pay close attention to any published recommendations from the Municipality concerning shoveling of the roof. Especially, older flat roofs in the area.
