how to prepare for spring break up
Warmth to the sun, more daylight, the anticipation of summer fun and...melting snow! Things to look out for when the winter snows have been excessive:
When the snow starts melting before the ground thaws, the moisture has nowhere to go sometimes except adjacent to your foundation. Any small cracks in the damp proofing material leads to water ingress and flooded crawl spaces and basements. March and April are good times to look in crawl spaces for incoming water and inspecting your floor covering at the exterior walls of your basement for moisture is essential to catching any issues before they become huge problems.
If you note moisture where it shouldn't be, installing a sump pump may be a good solution. They are relatively easy to install and provide a way to expel problematic water. Obviously this doesn't "solve" the problem but in the interim between actually repairing the water entry it's a great solution.
This winter has been tough on homes for ice damming and it appears the excess snow on the ground may lead to problems with water entry in your home when you've never experienced it before. Consider snow blowing a path which can give the melting snow a way to bypass your foundation.
Be wary of basement waterproofing solutions that repair the issue from the interior since most of the time those repairs are inadequate. The moisture is still entering your foundation, and in our experience the repairs do not stand the test of time.
